HOUSE OF COMMONS
SW1A 0AA Invitation to Home Care Summit
Thursday May 17th, 11.00-13.00, Committee Room 5, House of Commons
Dear Raina Summerson
As Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, I am deeply concerned about the effect that cuts to local authority budgets are having on the provision of home care services.
Did you know that over 70% of older people qualify for a free eye test at home? If this is you then why not take advantage of our new partnership with Healthcall, the local home visiting optician, it really can help improve the quality of your life.
Agincare's Live In Care service is purchased by the NHS (by Primary Care Trusts - PCTs) and by Councils as well as by private individuals. You might think that there is co-ordination between the NHS and Councils and, indeed, all do try to achieve this but amazingly people's care between hospital and returning home with on-going care needs is not really integrated there is an interesting article about this in the Community care magazine which might give you some interesting insights:
We are delighted to say that all our clients who need care and support to stay at home now have their care workers confirmed for the festivities.
Of course some people are cared for by their own families over Christmas but many, who live further afield, have more substantial care needs or simply consider their care worker like an extended family member, retain our service over Christmas.
Many people who use our Live in Care and support service do so because they need more care as they become older; what is less well known is that many younger people with disabilities use the service too.
It's sometimes funny what makes the news. Reading the headlines earlier in the week you'd think that home care wasn't subject to inspection; as you can see from our CQC report on this site our services are inspected.

Today, another report has highlighted poor standards of care received by many people in their own home. Whilst this is in part a sad indictment of some individuals or organisations which simply do not have the dignity, respect and care of their clients truly at their heart; in the vast majority of cases I expect it is due to the myriad of pressures faced by providers of home care.
